Why Emotional Skills?
WHAT ARE EMOTIONAL SKILLS?
Emotional skills (also called Emotional literacy or Emotional Intelligence) are the ability to recognize and manage emotions effectively. Being emotionally literate or intelligent means knowing what emotions feel like, having the words to describe these feelings, being able to clearly communicate emotional needs, and having the skills to respond appropriately to one's own and to other's feelings.
HOW CAN HAVING BETTER EMOTIONAL SKILLS HELP MY CHILD?
When a child can constructively regulate his/her feelings, it's much easier for her or him to discern the best choice in any given situation. These many daily choices build into a lifelong pattern that can dramatically impact a child’s social, academic, and career success.
WHAT DO THE SCIENTIFIC STUDIES SAY?
Twenty years of studies now prove that children who are taught basic social-emotional skills get higher grades. They have stronger relationships with their parents, teachers and peers. They have higher self-esteem, are more positively perceived by others, have lower rates of depression, and they are less likely to engage in high risk or destructive behavior.
